Dr. Moniba's Education

Although his parents were never educated and could not afford to send him to school, Dr. Moniba grew up with the understanding that education was his only way out of the hardships that he faced.  As a result, and with the help of missionaries, Dr. Moniba finished high school and was awarded a USAID scholarship to study at Cuttington University College, Bong County, Liberia, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education (Cum Laude) in 1964.  Recognizing his country’s need for competent individuals to accelerate social and economic growth and development, Dr. Moniba merited the Holy Cross Mission Scholarship in pursuit of a Masters in Secondary education at the State University of New York at New Paltz.  Upon receiving the Masters of Science Degree in Secondary Education with a Minor in Nineteenth Century European Studies in 1967, Dr. Moniba remained at New Paltz to complete a Post Masters’ degree in International Relations and European Studies by 1968.  Shortly thereafter, he received the distinguished Fullbright Scholarship and matriculated to Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, where he received the Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in International Relations and African Studies in 1975.  His doctoral dissertation was called, Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee Institute and Liberia:  Institutional and Moral Assistance, 1908-1969.

Dr. Moniba’s services and belief in the value of education to the Liberian nation began in 1964 at the Kakata Rural Training Institute, Margibi County, where he served as a teacher.  He later served as Vice Principal for the St. Augustine Senior and St. Cyprian’s Junior High Schools in Bolahun, Lofa County, Liberia.
